Laser Training near Brighton, Omtech 1000 x 600mm 100 watts – Paxton Access

A visit to a customer, Paxton Access Control Systems was requested as they had recently purchased an Omtech laser machine. However as they had found that there is one major problem with Omtech and that is that they don’t have any support in the UK. So the guys at Paxton called us to install, commission and train them on their new laser machine. The laser training was conducted by our expert service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. the session aimed to empower the customer with the skills and knowledge necessary to maximise the potential of their state-of-the-art laser system.

Omtech 1000 x 600 100 watt

Upon arrival at Paxton Access Control Systems the Omtech laser machine was visually inspected. The customer had already put the machine onto a small pedestal as a few Omtech laser machines are quite low to the floor, making using the laser machines difficult and back breaking.

The Omtech system were all connected to the incoming services, (Mains, PC, extraction etc). The machine was switched on and tested. The beam alignment was checked and was found to be off. The laser alignment was reset and the laser power was tested at shown to be 93.3w @70% 22mA power. It was noted that the power was a little low for the supplied specifications, the laser tube was inspected and was found that the laser tube was already out of manufacturers warranty by a few months.

Whilst testing the laser power from the nozzle it was noted that the red diode pointer was intermittent. This fault was located to be the physical connection into the pointer. It was suggested to the customer to contact Omtech and request a replacement.

The extraction unit was connected, but the pipework supplied was split and therefore would not provide the best extraction from the machine. Again the customer was advised to request a replacement.

Now the laser machine was powered and installed the laser training could be started. Here, we highlight the key topic areas covered during the training: –

Laser Safety

Safety is a fundamental aspect of working with laser systems. Gavin began the session by emphasising the importance of laser safety, ensuring that all attendees understood the risks associated with the laser beam and how to mitigate them. Topics included:

  • Proper use of safety goggles when required.
  • Awareness of laser classifications and safety interlocks.
  • Procedures for handling emergencies, such as accidental material ignition.

Machine Maintenance Routines

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep the laser machine operating at peak performance. Gavin guided the attendees through essential maintenance routines, such as:

  • Cleaning the lens and mirrors to ensure clear laser paths.
  • Checking and aligning the laser beam.
  • Inspecting the water cooling system to prevent overheating.
  • Lubricating moving parts to reduce wear and tear.

By following these routines, the school can ensure the longevity and reliability of their laser system.

Lightburn Software Training

Only the trial version of Lightburn was supplied from Omtech with their laser machine, so a new installation was supplied by Thinklaser. The training included detailed tutorials on Lightburn.

  • Lightburn Software: Known for its intuitive interface, Lightburn allows users to create intricate designs with ease. Gavin demonstrated how to:
    • Import and edit vector and raster files.
    • Adjust power and speed settings for different materials.
    • Use layers to control multiple operations in a single job.

Laser Cutting and Engraving Techniques

To help the staff explore the full potential of their laser system, Gavin demonstrated various cutting and engraving techniques:

  • Laser Cutting: Participants learned how to achieve clean, precise cuts by adjusting parameters like speed, power, and focus. Gavin highlighted the importance of testing settings on scrap material to achieve the best results.
  • Laser Engraving: Techniques for creating detailed engravings were also covered. Topics included:
    • Selecting appropriate resolution settings.
    • Controlling depth and texture through power adjustments.
    • Combining engraving with cutting for multi-dimensional projects.

Importance and Use of the Fume Extraction System

Proper fume extraction is essential for safety and maintaining air quality in the workspace. Gavin explained how the fume extraction system works and its critical role in:

  • Removing harmful gases and particulates produced during laser processing.
  • Protecting the health of users.
  • Preventing residue build-up on the laser components, which can affect performance.

Regular filter replacement and system inspections were also discussed to ensure continued effectiveness.

Suitable Materials for Laser Processing

Understanding which materials are suitable for laser cutting and engraving is key to unlocking creative possibilities while ensuring safety. Gavin provided a comprehensive overview of materials, including:

  • Suitable Materials: Acrylic, wood, MDF, paper, leather, and certain fabrics.
  • Materials to Avoid: PVC and other chlorine-containing plastics, which can release toxic fumes.

He also offered tips on preparing materials for optimal results, such as cleaning surfaces and securing materials to prevent shifting during processing.

Building Confidence and Creativity

By the end of the training, the staff at Paxton Access Control Systems had gained valuable hands-on experience with their laser machine. They left equipped not only with the technical knowledge but also with the confidence to explore creative projects ranging.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I improve Inconsistent Cutting Depth?

Verify that the laser head is correctly focused for the material’s thickness
Check for debris or dust on the mirrors and lenses.
Ensure that the cutting bed is level across the entire work area.

How do I stop the laser from cutting unevenly?

Inspect and clean the optical components (mirrors and lenses).
Check that the work bed is level; an uneven bed will affect cutting depth.
Ensure the material is flat and secured in place on the bed.

How to stop the laser head dragging on Material

Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.
