Laser Machine Service near White City, London on a Pure Laser located at the BBC
The visit to our new customer, the BBC located at their Television centre site in White City location near Shepherds Bush in London was requested as the laser was not firing correctly and requested if a laser service could also be carried out on their Pure Laser machine. This was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service included: –
Pure Laser 7050
Upon arrival at the BBC the Pure laser machine was visually inspected. The issue with the laser machine that the customer reported was that the laser head would intermittently move but the laser would not fire. This type of error is normally associated with an interlock or chiller issue.
The machine interlocks were then checked one by one to isolate the issue.
This started with the main lid to the enclosure. The machine only had one limit switch for the door. This was found to be operating correctly, with the lid open the controller would display a ‘ Machine Protected’ error stopping the machine from processing.
The next component to check was the chiller. This was tested by disconnecting the internal chiller power cable. The controller displayed a ‘Water Error’ as expected from a indication point of view. Both conditions correctly prevented the laser head from moving and the laser from firing. No other interlocks could be found on the machine.
The connection from the chiller compartment to the rest of the machine was not secured correctly, however this would not cause an issue as seen by the customer. This fitting was secured.
The controller, laser PSU and all associated wiring were inspected and checked, all were found to be operating correctly. A wire connected to one of the fans on the chiller radiated was found to be disconnected. This was re-attached.
No other physical components or connection could be found that could have been causing the issue, so the engineer turned to servicing the remainder of the laser machine, this included: –
- Electrical Systems – Health Check, Fit & Function
- Safety Interlocks & Emergency Stop- Health Check, Fit & Function
- Air Assist Pump – Function
- Chiller Check – Health Check, Fit & Function
- Chiller Drain, Flush and Water Replacement
- Full Bed Leveling – Adjustment and Check
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Tension Check on All Drive Belts
- Mirror Inspection & Clean
- Lens Inspection & Clean
- Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials

The beam alignment was checked and found to be good. The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle and was initially measured to be 40w @99% power. After all the service items had been completed, the final power output of the laser now measured 45.9w @99% power.
A number of test jobs were then carried out on the machine, with all functions operating correctly. Basic training was also provided on the machine and the software.
Due to the unknown age of the laser tube and the measure output power, it was recommended to the customer to replace the laser tube and laser PSU if the intermittent failure was to happen again.

Any of the consumable items mentioned above, Lens, Mirrors, Laser tubes, Power supplies are all available and can be bought separately in our online shop.
