The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. This was shown to be reading 35.7w @100% power at the nozzle.
The unit had a BOFA AD base 1 extraction unit, the customer had ordered a new pre-filter to be fitted as part of the service.

This filter was installed and a number of test runs were completed on the machine as a whole and the machine performed satisfactorily following adjustments.
Universal VLS 360 – 50 watt
The second Universal laser machine was now looked into as the next machine to service at The Purbeck School site. There were no initial reports of any issues with this machine, so the laser service work was started.
The service items were carried out with only minor issues : –
- Inspected and Cleaned Mirrors
- Inspected and Cleaned 2″ focal lens
- Inspected and Cleaned protective window and laser nozzle
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Inspect, Clean and tension belts
- Cleaned all Fan Filters
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Checked beam alignment – adjusted as was out of the right side of the bed
- Inspected Interlocks and Chiller Alarms
- Inspected and checked electrics, sensors and switches
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. This was shown to be reading 45.2w @100% power at the nozzle.
The extraction unit with this machine was a Purex 400i Extractor. The customer had informed us that the display was damaged and that the main buttons were broken. A new fascia and display board had been brought to site as part of the service. These units were replaced and the unit tested as a whole.

As final testing was being performed the customer reported that, on occasion, the materials selected from the the software material library would not cut correctly particularly on the horizontal plane.
The issue was investigated and the issue was found that the laser beam profile was more of a diamond shape coming out of the laser unit rather than the standard round. This misshapen beam was explained as the cause of the issue, as the beam is focusing at different points in the two axis. The recommended solutions would be adjust the material library to ensure that the optimum focus setting is used between the two different planes, or replacing the laser cartridge to restore the standard gaussian profile beam.
The machine was tested and was shown to be operating as expected following the laser service work

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I improve Inconsistent Cutting Depth?
Verify that the laser head is correctly focused for the material’s thickness
Check for debris or dust on the mirrors and lenses.
Ensure that the cutting bed is level across the entire work area.
How do I stop the laser from cutting unevenly?
Inspect and clean the optical components (mirrors and lenses).
Check that the work bed is level; an uneven bed will affect cutting depth.
Ensure the material is flat and secured in place on the bed.
How to stop the laser head dragging on Material
Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.

Laser Machine Service near Wareham, on 2 x Universal laser machines – The Purbeck School
A visit to a customer, The Purbeck School was requested by our partner RS Design and Technology as the customer was having an issue with their Universal Versa Laser VLS230 30 watt, whereby it would intermittently alarm and beep at the operator. Their other Versa VLS360 50 watt was also in need of it’s annual service. The laser service of the Universal laser machines was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Universal VLS 230 – 35 watt
Upon arrival at The Purbeck School the universal machine and the reported issue were visually inspected. The customer advised that removing the 9v battery stopped the alarm and also that placing a heavy weight on the rear of the laser cover also prevent the beeping and alarm issue.
The fault was investigate and it was found that flexing the machine cover could repeatedly trigger the alarm. The laser cover was removed and the laser source removed and inspected. All associated cabling and wiring were repositioned and ensured that the wiring was not being compressed or have any interaction with the covers. The covers were reassembled and the machine and chassis were tested. No further alarms could be generated by the flexing of the covers.

As this issue was now resolved the service of the laser machine could be started, the service items were carried out with only minor issues : –
