Laser Machine Service near Upminster, on a HPC 4060 LaserScript Machine – Gaynes School
A visit to our customer, Gaynes School was requested by our partner RS Design and Technology as the customer had said that the machine was not working. From discussions with the RS Engineer, it was quickly determined that the root cause was the cooling circuit failure. The laser machine service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –

Upon arrival at the Gaynes School, the HPC Laserscript machine was inspected to confirm the root cause of the laser machine not working properly. On these older style HPC Laserscript machine, the cooling circuit is nothing more than a bucket of water with a pump inside. There is no feedback, no alarm capability to stop the system from failing as shown in this case. The cause of the system failure was the fact the water had evaporated to such an extent that the pump had failed. This cooling circuit was replaced with a newer and more reliable CW 3000 Industrial Chiller.
With this cooling circuit now renewed, it was noted that when placing the chiller unit into position that the extraction hose had deteriorated and wasn’t as effective when extracting from the machine. This was also replaced with a new 150mm diameter flexible hose.
The rest of the machine was checked over and t was found that one of the piston struts which holds the main door open was also faulty, this resulted in the door falling closed when opened which could cause serious injury. The piston strut was replaced and the main door made safe again.
It was also noted when testing the output nozzle that the air pump wasn’t particularly strong. This resulted in the air pump being replaced. With this replacement, it was found that all the components of the machine were now in working order and so our full service scheduled could now be completed.
The following items of the service were carried out with no issues: –
- Water Cooling Chiller Inspection, Clean, Drain & Refill
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
The beam need the full alignment procedure carrying out as the beam was misaligned across the hwole bed. All mirrors and lens were inspected and cleaned. The main focusing lens did have some damage on the surface which was unable to be removed with cleaning. The customer was advised that this may need replacing in the near future.
The laser power was then checked from the exit aperture of the nozzle and was shown to be 48w @80%.
This concluded the servicing of the HPC Laserscript machine. There was a request from the teacher if a small amount of training could be supplied. To keep costs down for the customer, the engineer ran through some training on the machine whilst he was still on site.
