Laser Machine Service near New Malden, Boxford BGL460 80 watts – Coombe Girls’ School
A visit to a new customer, Coombe Girls’ School. The customer had requested a visit as they were having issues with the laser alignment of the system. Whilst on site the laser machine would also be given a health check. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Boxford BGL690 80 watt
Upon arrival at the Coombe Girls’ School the flatbed machine was visually inspected. The machine was in generally good condition. Since the issue of the beam being out of alignment was the original reason for the laser service, this was checked first. The laser was out of alignment across the whole bed. The beam was aligned as per our normal alignment procedure. This ensures that the laser is in alignment across all four corners of the worktable and in the centre.

All the mirrors and lens were checked and cleaned. The focusing lens needed to be replaced as it had damage to the centre area of the lens.

Other items of a service were carried out with no issues: –
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Inspect, Drain and refill chiller
- Auto Focus Pen Inspection & Clean
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
With the main laser machine switched off, the controller was still powered. This was down to the USB cable being connected to the local PC, this provides enough power through 5v to keep the controller powered. This is an issue as when the main system is powered back on, the unit does not home as the controller is already on, therefore the unit isn’t calibrated and job files may not be in the intended positions.
When checking the laser and the laser power output it was noted that the laser tube had discolouration on the output components.

This is a good indicator that the laser tube has been overdriven in processing job files over the course of the laser tubes life. The laser power was measured from the exit aperture of the nozzle and was shown to measure 75w @79% power. This power was locked into the software so to not allow overdriving and stressing the laser tube.
At Coombe Girls’ School they also have a Purex iFume 400i extraction system inline with the laser machine. As part of the laser service this machine is also inspected and checked. In this case the pre-filter was blocked and there was a strong smell coming from the unit exhaust, even though this was being funneled out of the main building. So this indicated that both the Pre filter and Main Filter needed to be replaced, as one was blocked and the other symptoms meant that the active carbon filtration inside the filter had become saturated. Several jobs were run on the machine and all tested ok. The customer was happy with the service provided.
Any of the consumable items mentioned above, Lens, Mirrors, Laser tubes, Power supplies are all available and can be bought separately in our online shop.
