Laser Machine Service near Leicester, on a Chinese Red Laser and a Lotus Laser BLU125 Machine – Three Point

A visit to a new customer, Three Point was requested as the customers laser were in need of a service and the BLU125 Lotus Laser System was having interlock issues. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –

Upon arrival at Three Point the machines was visually inspected. The laser machines were in different conditions and so the Service was started on the generic Chinese machine first: –

Red Laser – 100watt

With the more indepth inspection on this machine continued it was noted that there was a heavy build up of contamination on the linear rails and the bearing blocks from debris and old grease. The rails and bearing blocks were cleaned and the rails re-lubricated. The belts were also checked and cleaned in order to prevent any tooth slippage over the drive pulleys.

The alignment was checked and was found to be out. This was corrected so that the alignment was correct in all four corners and in the centre of the field. The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the nozzle. The power was shown to be reading 74w @99% power.

All the mirrors were inspected and cleaned. Mirror 1 was found to be made of SI material where as mirrors 2 and 3 were made from Molybdenum. The main focusing lens was also cleaned, it was found that when removed the main 4″ main focusing lens had damage around the edge. This should not affect the marking or cutting performance, but that it should be monitored closely. A spare 4″ focusing lens was left with the customer in case of an emergency break of the focusing lens.

The service continued. The chiller unit was inspected and the customer stated that there was an issue with the original chiller unit and so the unit was replaced with a spare CW5000 unit. However the chiller alarm signal cable was not working and so the connection had been shorted to allow the machine to operate. The pinouts were checked on the spare CW5000 unit and a new chiller alarm cable was installed and was tested to be all working as per normal.

Upon inspecting the Sensors, electrics and switches a couple of issues were found. The E-stop was a keyed switch, which is not allowed under the machinery directive. There was a piece of metallic foil covering the door reed switch, this was removed.

After the servicing had been completed the laser power was once again measured at the output to the laser nozzle. This was now measuring 89.5w @89% power. It was recommended to start budgeting for a new Laser PSU unit as the current unit looked to be he original unit and appears to be quite old.

The machine was tested by running some of the customer previous jobs on the machine, all tested ok and the customer was happy with the results.

Lotus Laser – BLU125 – 100watt

The laser service could now move onto the Lotus laser System machine and the issue of the interlocks.

The customer had initially advised that they had to disable the interlocks using the key in order to have their laser machine operating. The red spanner light was illuminated on the chassis potentially indicating the fault.

The issue was investigated and all interlocks were inspected. The fault was found to be a misaligned sensor on the front pass through port. The sensor was adjusted to now be detectable by it’s counterpart on the chassis. The door sensor was also in need of refitting and repositioning as the customer had removed one of them whilst trying to resolve the issue themselves.

Whilst repositioning this door interlock one of the main door gas struts was found to be loose and moving during opening and closing of the lid. This was tightened and secured in place.

All mirrors and the main focusing lens were inspected and cleaned. The 2.5″ focusing lens was to be damaged around the edge. Like the ‘Red Laser’ this should not affect the cutting or engraving performance, but it is worth keeping the situation monitored closely.

The service continued with the following items with little to no issues

• Checked laser alignment – found to be out and adjusted as necessary
• Inspected and cleaned laser nozzle
• Cleaned fan filters
• Inspected, cleaned and lubircated linear bearings
• Inspected and cleaned electrical bay
• Inspected and tested all sensors

It was noted that even though the safety interlocks were all now working that the red spanner indicator on the front of the machine was still illuminated. All wiring on the electrical cabinet were checked, including pull tests on the cables, no issues were found. Voltage checks on all three power supplies were carried out and were within normal specifications. The machine is fitted with a PLC which was indicating that a laser service is due.

This is likely the reason why the red spanner illumination remains lit. This is something that only Lotus Laser can reset which unfairly, in our opinion, ties you to Lotus Laser for clearing the notice. However it does not affect the overall operation of the machine and therefore is not an operational issue for customers.

After the servicing had been completed the laser power was once again measured at the output to the laser nozzle. This was now measuring 95w @90% power.

The machine was tested by running some of the customer previous jobs on the machine, all tested ok and the customer was happy with the results.
