Laser Machine Service near Leatherhead, on a HPC 6840 LaserScript Machine – Downsend School
A visit to our new customer, Downsend School was required as the customer was requiring a service on their aging laser machine, as the customer was unable to cut through 3mm acrylic. We recommend a yearly service for all our customer to keep their machines running at peak performance. The HPC service was conducted by our highly experience service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Upon arrival at Downsend School, the HPC Laserscript machine was visually inspected. It was noted that there was significant surface rust on the machine, which maybe an indication that PVC had been cut on the laser at some point. The system was also fitted with an old Leetro controller running LaserCut 5.3. The customer was interested to hear of the all the new advancements in controller and laser softwares like RDworks and Lightburn.

The laser beam was tested and was found to be slightly misaligned and also clipping in the inside of the nozzle. The alignment was adjusted and the laser power measured at the exit aperture to the nozzle. It was shown to be measuring 44w @100% power. Due to the age of the laser and the discolouration of the cathode end of the laser tube, showing that the tube had been overdriven as there was no milliammeter on the machine, it was recommended to replace the laser tube.

A new SPT 60watt laser tube was installed with High Voltage (HV) connectors and aligned to the system. All the mirrors and lens were removed and cleaned as they were all heavily contaminated. The main focusing lens had a slight blemish but should not effect the cutting or marking performance.

The rest of the main service items of any of our service visits were then carried out: –
- Auto Focus Pen Inspection & Clean
- Inspect and Hoovered out the laser chamber and bed area
- Inspect, Drain and Refill Chiller cooling circuit
- Electronics Inspection
- Check Bed Level
- Check the field scale calibration of both X and Y axes.
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
- Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials
After the completion of the service items the laser power was measured again at the exit aperture of the nozzle. The laser power was now reading 69.6w @74% power.

After all the laser machine’s services were checked the laser was tested again at the laser aperture of the nozzle. It was now showing to be 62.4w @80%.
The machine had an extraction system supplied by Purex, a Purex 400i extractor unit. This was also heavily rusted internally and was producing a strong smell of acrylic from the exhaust vent of the unit. This indicates that the active carbon with the combined filter had either degraded or been used up and it was recommended to replace both the Combined Filter and the Pre-filter in the unit.

To complete the service several jobs were run on the machine to check it’s overall function.. and the teacher at Downsend School was happy with the results.
Any of the consumable items mentioned above, Lens, Mirrors, Laser tubes, Power supplies are all available and can be bought separately in our online shop.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I improve Inconsistent Cutting Depth?
Verify that the laser head is correctly focused for the material’s thickness
Check for debris or dust on the mirrors and lenses.
Ensure that the cutting bed is level across the entire work area.
How do I stop the laser from cutting unevenly?
Inspect and clean the optical components (mirrors and lenses).
Check that the work bed is level; an uneven bed will affect cutting depth.
Ensure the material is flat and secured in place on the bed.
How to stop the laser head dragging on Material
Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.
