Laser Machine Service near Hook, on a 6090 80 watt HPC LaserScript Machine & a Red Sail 3040 50 watt machine – Lord Wandsworth College

A visit to a new customer, Lord Wandsworth College as the customer had informed us that both their HPC laser machine and Red Sail laser machine were in need of servicing. The laser service of both machines was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –

HPC Laserscript – 6090 80 watt

Upon arrival at Lord Wandsworth College the HPC machine were visually inspected. The unit had an ageing Leetro controller with a CL1600 80 watt laser and a CW5000 chiller. The service was conducted and the following issues were found and recitified: –

All the mirror and optics along the optical path were inspected and mirror 3 was found to be heavily contaminated. With these lens being the molybdenum mirrors, the mirror was able to be successfully cleaned and reinstalled into the HPC machine.

Continuing on with the laser service, the cooling circuit was inspected and a blockage was found with the circuit. This was successfully dislodged and the chiller was drained and refilled with distilled water.

The following items from the service visit were carried out with little or no issues: –

  • Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
  • Inspect, Clean and tension belts
  • Checked and cleaned laser tube
  • Inspected and checked bed level
  • Inspected Interlocks and Chiller Alarms
  • Inspected and checked electrics, sensors and switches
  • Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test

When aligning the machine after the above items had been completed, it was found that the X-axis had been dislodged from it’s mounting points and was now skew from being perpendicular from the Y-axis. The drive pulley from the one-side of the connection was released and the X-axis brought back into square. The drive pulley was then re-engaged.

The aligned was finished off and the laser power was then measured from the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. It was shown to be measuring 80.3w @85% power. No milliammeter was present.

Several of the customer jobs were run on the machine to check it’s overall function, on running the BOFA AD Oracle IQ was checked for function and efficiency. The filters had been recently replaced and were in good condition.

Red Sail – 3040 50 watt

Upon completion of the HPC machine service the laser service visit then moved onto the customer smaller machine. This Red Sail laser was also visually inspected. The unit also had an ageing Leetro controller with a 50 watt laser and a CW3000 cooler. The service was conducted and the following issues were found and recitified: –

All the mirror and optics along the optical path were inspected and the main focusing 20mm gallium arsenide lens was heavily contaminated. The lens was able to be successfully cleaned and reinstalled into the Red Sail machine.

When aligning the machine after the above items had been completed, it was found that a suspected small fire had at some point taken place as the red pointer wiring showed signs of melting, additional to this it was found that wiring inside the cable chain was damaged and broken.

This was discussed with the customer, the customer informed us that the it was unlikely that the machine would be retained in the short to medium term so the repairs were deemed non-essential at this time.

The aligned was finished off and the laser power was then measured from the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. It was shown to be measuring 42w @85% power. No milliammeter was present.

Several of the customer jobs were run on the machine to check it’s overall function, on running the BOFA AD Oracle IQ was checked for function and efficiency. The filters were dated from 2022, despite their age there was no errors or alarms coming from the extractor and there were no smells that could be detected coming from the exhaust. It was still recommended to change both the Pre-Filter and the main HEPA filter due to their age and the likely depleted charcoal. Following the tests the customer was happy with the results produced.
