Laser Machine Service near Hoddesdon, on a 6840 60 watt HPC LaserScript Machine – The John Warner School
A visit to our new customer, The John Warner School was required as the customer had an issue with the HPC laser machine not firing when requested. There also requested that a full laser service be carried out on the HPC machine, this was conducted by our highly experienced laser service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
HPC LaserScript Machine 6840 60 watt
Upon arrival at The John Warner School the machine was visually inspected. Due to the customer report of the laser not firing. This was the first thing that was investigated.
A standard method of diagnosing how or why the laser will not fire it to isolate certain components to establish whether the fault lies with these components or elsewhere. In this case the laser PSU was looped out, effectively allowing the laser PSU to fire independently of the rest of the system. In this case the action was completed and the laser was able to be fired using the test button.
This showed that the laser PSU and the laser tube was is good working order. So for this scenario it now points to the safety circuitry not allowing the laser to fire, due to all the safety requirements not being met. Depending on the machine and the wiring of the safety circuitry normally means that either the door interlocks are not being made or are faulty, or that the water flow meter is not registering correctly. These are normally looped in series with each other so it is a case of testing each one individually to find the fault.
In our experience of the HPC laser machines, it is normally the water flow meter that is faulty. So this was investigated first. This was found to also be the issue on this machine. So the water flow sensor was replaced and the laser unit tested again. The machine was now able to be fired as per normal.
With this issue now fixed the laser machine service could now move on to servicing the machine and making sure it was running optimally. The rest of the service was completed as per the below:-
- Inspect and Clean All Mirrors – these were dirty
- Inspect and clean main focus lens – also dirty
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Auto Focus Pen Inspection & Clean
- Honey Comb Bed Inspection & Leveling
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
- Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials

The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. It was shown to be reading 64.3w @75% power. It was noted that one of the two laser pointers lens was slightly damaged. This is likely down to either flare up off the material or back reflection from the work piece itself.

It was also noted that several of the door locks were either broken or damaged. Some of the lock barrels were moved onto panels were laser light could be seen under normal operation so to make the machine as safe as possible in the school environment. The customer said that they may have replacement lock and would replace them themselves.

It was also noted that during the testing phase of the service that the HMI control buttons were sometimes unresponsive. Since the machine is using the older Leetro controller, it was recommended that if the customer wanted to replace the HMI that it would be advisable to also upgrade to the Ruida controller unit at the same time.
The extraction unit that is usually supplied with these older units is an inline fan. On this particular unit the inline fan was venting directly to an external wall. It was recommended to the customer that at the very least it would be best to vent above the roofline, so that the natural airflow would better disperse the fumes, it was also discussed to potentially install an inline filter to help capture the larger particles before being expelled outside.
Several job were run on the machine to check it’s overall function.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I improve Inconsistent Cutting Depth?
Verify that the laser head is correctly focused for the material’s thickness
Check for debris or dust on the mirrors and lenses.
Ensure that the cutting bed is level across the entire work area.
How do I stop the laser from cutting unevenly?
Inspect and clean the optical components (mirrors and lenses).
Check that the work bed is level; an uneven bed will affect cutting depth.
Ensure the material is flat and secured in place on the bed.
How to stop the laser head dragging on Material
Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.
