Laser Machine Service near Helston, on a GravoTech LS900 – KF Online
The visit to our new customer KF Online, better known as – Anniversary Gifts was for a service and repair on their 2 x Gravotech LS900 machines, the work horses of their operation. The fault with the machines were that on startup one machine would move the Z-axis down and then alarm out with ‘End of travel errors’. On their other machine, this error would also appear, but on an intermittent basis. This laser service was conducted by our highly experienced engineer ‘Phil Harris’. The engineer arrived on site and commenced the laser repair. The machines were old machines, circa 2008, but were still in working condition and were visually inspected and has been kept in a good condition.
GravoGraph LS900 – Yorky
This was the machine that was showing the error on every start-up of ‘End of Travel’ error. The error was shown to the engineer by the customer and work commenced on resolving the issue. The issue directly pointed to one of the height sensors on the Z-axis. This would either be the sensor switch at the top of the travel of the focusing pen on the laser head directly.
The wiring was traced back to the control board and the wires checked for continuity. The bottom travel sensor was checked and was found to be working as expected. The focusing pen was then checked and was found to be not working. The plunger was checked for contamination and function, but was found to be clean and working as expected. This pointed to the wiring being the issue between the focusing pen and the control board.
The wiring loom was inspected and found that there had been a repair previously on the machine at the first junction box. The connections were checked and the error was found to be between the focusing pen and this first junction box. The cable was removed from the cable chain and the wire was found to be broken in several places. The wiring was repaired and the machine tested. This was checked with the cold startup of the machine and the running of a few jobs by the customer.
Gravotech LS 900 – Yorky’s little *****
The second machine, affectionately known as Yorky’s little …….. was having the same issues as it’s counterpart, but it was more intermittent, however now the customer knew what the problem was and what the solution is the customer was happy to leave the repair whilst the machine was working and repair it themselves if it became more of an issue.
There was another issue on the second machine, which was the X-axis was feeling quite grindy when moved by hand, and on some occasions would cause and error on the machine mid-process
The error was investigated and although difficult on these machine to get access to the bearing and the rail. The engineer was able to clean the rails and apply some more lubricant, which seemed to obtain a marked improvement on the movement of the access.
Some of KF Online jobs were run on the machine as a final test and the customer was happy with the outcome.
