Laser Machine Service near Guildford, on a ATA AL1390 Laser Machine – Sign Seen Ltd

A visit to a new customer, SignSeen Ltd was requested as the customer had informed us that their ATA laser machine wasn’t cutting straight and the red pointer was very dim. They also requested that a service be carried out on their machine. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser visit included: –

Upon arrival at SignSeen Ltd the machine was visually inspected. The machine looked to be in good condition and in good working order.

The customer initial concern of the beam not cutting straight was then investigated for possible causes. The laser beam and spot shape were inspected and was of suitable size and shape. The optics were then also checked and cleaned as necessary. The main focusing lens was then removed and inspected. The customer was using a 4 inch lens. The O’ring seating the main focusing lens in position was damaged and is the most likely cause of the beam misaligning.

A new O’ring was fitted and tested. The laser tube had to be adjusted slightly to align the beam to the Z-axis and therefore cut through the material in a perpendicular fashion. The focal position was checked as the customer was using 11mm as the focus setting. It was that at 13mm focal point the laser nozzle have a better spot size. This was demonstrated and explained to the customer about the different spot sizes.

The other issue that was reported was that the red pointer looked dim. This was adjusted as the red pointer was not firing through the small aperture in it’s housing. This was now showing on the material in the correct location.

The rest of the machine was then checked over and the following items were carried out with no issues

  • Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
  • Drained, Flushed and refilled Chiller unit
  • Electronics Inspection
  • Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
  • Checked the field scale calibration of the X and Y axis
  • Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials

The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser head and was shown to be measuring 102w @65% 29mA power. Even though the laser was built in 2020, it was still producing enough power for the customers requirements.

Now a note to all of our customers. The above photo states that the laser tube is a 150watt laser tube. The length of the laser tube points in a different direction. For this length of laser tube, the ‘MAXIMUM’ output power is 150watt, the ‘SAFE’ output power is actually 130w. This means that the laser tube is capable of 150watt, but it is not advisable to run it as this level, as it would seriously degrade the life of the laser tube.

Spoke to the customer about the potential for different focal lens and installed a 2.5″ lens, as this was what the customer had used previously on this machine. The focal distance that gave the best spot size, was at the original 11mm.

The customer did have an Purex 800i 3 tier extraction system, the pre-filter, the main HEPA filter and the main chemical filter were all checked for age and filter life.
