Laser Machine Service near Ewell, on a 1290 100 watt Mantech Machine – The Epsom and Ewell High School
A visit to a new customer, Epsom & Ewell High School was requested by our partner RS Design and Technology as the customer had said that the machine was in need of a service and some parts needed replacing. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Upon arrival at Epsom & Ewell High School the Mantech machine was visually inspected. The laser machine was situated in a classroom that was notably warm. The Mantech supplied CW 3000 is underpowered for the 100watt laser tube that is fitted to the system. It was recommended to the customer that they should upgrade to a CW 5200 to the proper effective cooling of the laser and extend the life of the laser tube.

The HMI display on the front of the machine was found to be damaged. The customer had installed a temporary protective clear piece of acrylic. The damage was not effecting the operation of the machine, so was advised that it did not need replacing.

The customer informed the engineer on site that when they run some jobs on the machine that the extraction machine struggles to clear the smoke effectively, this was demonstrated to the engineer and significant smoke buildup was observed. Upon inspection the Mantech supplied Bofa AD 500 appears to be underpowered for the size of the unit. It was recommended to consider the Bofa AD 1000 as this would be able to clear the smoke and would not be required to run on as higher flow rate, therefore improving filter life expectancy.
The laser service was then started on the machine.
All mirror and lens were cleaned. The installed 4″ lens had visible marks and scratches that will have effected the laser output quality. This was discussed with the customer. Two options were tabled as the lens tube could supports the 4″ and 2.5″ lenses. With the discussion with the customer pointing more to the requirement of the 2.5″ lens. This was installed into the lens tube to provide a smaller spot for improved precision on the customer engraving jobs.

Upon inspection of the wiring of the machine it was noted that the wire loom to the red diode pointer was exposed inside the cable chain. The issue was resolved by removing and isolating the affected wiring.

The beam alignment was checked and a full realignment was required as the laser was off by some margin.
The following were also checked as part of the visit and presented no issues or concerns: –
- Inspected, cleaned and oiled linear bearings
- Electronics Inspection
- Inspected and tested Safety Interlocks
- Inspected and tested all sensors
- Drained, flushed and refilled the chiller system
The laser power was then tested at the output of the laser head. The laser power was shown to be 93w @99% power.
The final part of the service visit was to install a replacement Honeycomb bed into the machine. As there was still time in the arranged visit the engineer provided the customer with some operational tips and maintenance guidance.
Any of the consumable items mentioned above, Lens, Mirrors, Laser tubes, Power supplies are all available and can be bought separately in our online shop.
