Laser Machine Service near Edenbridge, on a Wattsan 1610 100w laser Machine – Kewell Converters
A visit to our long standing customer, Kewell Converters was required as the customer had requested that a full laser service be carried out on their Wattsan machine, this was conducted by our highly experienced laser service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Wattsan Laser Machine 1610 – 100 watt
Upon arrival at Kewell Converters the machine was visually inspected and a full condition check was carried out. The customer is primarily using this system for engraving applications on foam. It was noted that the laser head is of significant weight.


Engraving typically requires rapid changes in direction with high acceleration and deceleration. The added mass of this laser head means that there is an increased inertia with the system, therefore the machine has to work harder and applies more stress to start and stop movement, This can result in reduced engraving quality, including potential loss of detail, slight blurring ‘due to vibration’ particularly at higher marking speeds. It also results in slower possible marking times and increased wear and tear on the motion components over time, especially the belts bearing and linear rails.
The majority of the weight on this particular laser head is down to the autofocus function being attached to the laser head itself, as opposed to being integrated into the Z-axis movment.
The following was carried out as part of a standard service: –
- Inspect and Clean All Mirrors
- Inspect and clean main focus lens – this had a mark that was unable to removed by cleaning
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Test Beam Alignment – Slight adjustment required
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
- Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials


Whilst cleaning the nozzle and autofocus probe it was noted that the air assist pipe had a small hole in it. This was obviously causing a leak of air and air being diverted away from the nozzle. The broken section was removed and the refitted to the nozzle for normalised airflow.
The laser power was measured at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. It was shown to be reading 100w @26mA 99% power.
Several job were run on the machine to check it’s overall function. Whilst running these test it was noted that the door hinges are worn and not in good condition. It was recommended to the customer to replace these as a matter of health and safety for the operator.
