Laser Machine Service near Canterbury, CTR 6090 80 watts – Barton Manor School
A visit to a new customer, Barton Manor School. The customer had requested a service visit as their machine was in need of not only a service but the customer had reported having an issue where the laser would fire even with the safety door open. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser machine service visit included: –
CTR 6090 80 watt
Upon arrival at Barton Manor School the flatbed machine was visually inspected. Apart from the reported fault the machine was in a generally good condition.
The main door interlock was inspected. It appeared to be functioning as per normal. There was a green indicator on the sensor, showing a green LED when the main door was closed and a red LED when the main door was open. The connections to the main controller and the laser PSU were removed and re-terminated to ensure that there was a secure connection. Within the HMI controller screen the ‘Door to Protect’ was enabled. This setting was related to the drawer tray beneath the main access door. The machine was reassembled and was now verifying that the laser now only fired with the door closed.

The service aspect of the visit could now be started. The laser power was initially measured at the output to the laser nozzle. The power was shown to be reading 57w @90% 25mA. Following on from this all four mirrors, as per the design of this machine and main focusing lens were cleaned. The laser power was then rechecked and was shown to be reading 62w at the same setting. This was measuring lower than the machines normal 80watt.
This was discussed with the customer and a new SPT 80w laser tube was installed. The system was fully aligned with the new laser tube and the power was shown to be now measuring 78.9w @85% 25mA.

The remaining items of a service were carried out with no issues: –
- Water Cooling Chiller Inspection, the customer had recently replaced the water
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
At the end of the laser machine service, a discussion was had with the customer as to the possible causes of the laser continuing to fire whilst the main door was open. It was advised that if the error was to reoccur that it would be advisable to change the laser PSU.

The extraction unit that was fitted with the machine was also inspected and the customer advised that the extraction fllters were aging and that they might need to be replaced in the near future. With the current back log of the active carbon being available, main filters are on a 3-4 week lead time.
