Laser Machine Service near Bognor Regis, on a 6840 60 watt HPC LaserScript Machine – Felpham Community College
A visit to a new customer, Felpham Community College was requested by the customer as their HPC laser machine had not been serviced in a long while, and was in need of some TLC. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser visit included: –
Upon arrival at Felpham Community College the machine was visually inspected. It was noted that the machine was very dirty and there was a lot of debris inside and below the work area.

The laser chamber was cleaned and all the debris was removed. It is important to remove any fallen debris from the base of your laser cabinet, as if the laser is cutting material then the laser beam passes through the table into the material below, and is at greater risk of causing a fire. In which itself is dangerous.

Before the laser service was started, the laser power was tested at the exit aperture of the laser nozzle. It was shown to be reading 40w @90% power. The mirrors were all inspected and cleaned. It was noted that mirror 1 and mirror 2 were of the molybdenum variety, whilst mirror 3 was of a Silicon variety. The surface of this Silicon third mirror was damaged and, unlike the molybdenum mirrors, is unable to be cleaned or polished off. So the mirror was replaced with a new molybdenum mirror.
The main focusing lens was also checked and was also found to have a mark upon the surface. This was able to be cleaned. The O’ring used to mount the focusing lens was damaged and was replaced.

Checking the electrical cabinet, sensors, switches and the E-stop circuit. It was found that the controller had been updated and was left hanging inside the electrical enclosure. It was also found that the upper Z travel limit sensor was damaged and so was replaced. Whilst installing a new upper Z sensor, it was also noted that the Z travel limit sensors were wired in reverse, which is probably the reason for the upper Z-sensor being broken as a result.
The HPC laser unit was also connected to an external CW4000 chiller unit. This was inspected and was found to contain a lot of debris in the water reservoir. This was also despite a small filter being placed in-line with the water flow to try and catch any particles. The unit was drained, flushed and refilled with distilled water.
Upon power up of the unit, it was noted that the laser would not fire. The internal flow sensor was checked and was found to be very badly blocked. The unit was stripped and cleaned, however this did not resolve the issue, so a new flow sensor was installed.
The rest of the machine was then checked over and the following items were carried out with no issues
- Check Beam Alignment – slight adjustment required
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
- Check overall machine function by Test Cutting Customer Materials
During the final testing it was noted that the chamber would fill with lots of smoke, when engraving or marking. The system was fitted with a small inline fan. This was inspected for contamination. The unit was disconnected from the machine, and the inlet was cleaned and the visible motor cleaned up. This cleanout did improve the airflow slightly, although it is still deemed seriously underpowered for the size of the machine.

The laser power was re-measured at the exit aperture of the laser head and was shown to be noew measuring 55w @90% power. No Ammeter are usually present on these old HPC laser machines. Even tho the laser tube was built in 2019, it was still producing more than sufficient power required.

A number of jobs were then run on the machine and all was shown to be working as the customer expects. This concluded the laser service

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I improve Inconsistent Cutting Depth?
Verify that the laser head is correctly focused for the material’s thickness
Check for debris or dust on the mirrors and lenses.
Ensure that the cutting bed is level across the entire work area.
How do I stop the laser from cutting unevenly?
Inspect and clean the optical components (mirrors and lenses).
Check that the work bed is level; an uneven bed will affect cutting depth.
Ensure the material is flat and secured in place on the bed.
How to stop the laser head dragging on Material
Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.
