Laser Machine Service near Berkhamsted, on a 1290 80 watt Mantech Machine – BigDay Designs Ltd
A visit to a new customer, BigDay Designs Ltd was requested as the customer was having issues with the laser being intermittent and turning at random points during processing. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Upon arrival at BigDay Designs Ltd the Mantech machine was visually inspected. The laser machine looked to be in good condition. The investigation into the fault reported by the customer was then started. The issue was identified to be a relay for checking some interlock sensors was intermittently flicking on and off.
The way that the Mantech machines are wired is that the process for startup, is to turn on the mains power via the mains isolator and then switching the keyswitch, what then happens is the machine checks the external interlocks for doors etc. 7 in total. The reset button is then able to be pressed and this in turn then engages the contactor and enables the power to XYZ motors. With the above intermittent flicking of this relay it deduced that the issue lies within the interlock checking circuitry.
All the interlocks were checked, they had all been previously by-passed by securing a small portion of metal to the sensor with tape. These all seemed to be working as per expected. Red light showing when active and no light when deactivated.
The investigation then moved on to checking the source of the power to these interlock switches. The 24V PSU. This power supply had 2x 24V outputs. The incoming voltage was measured at the standard 240V. The first 24V output was tested and was measuring fine. On measuring the other output a spark was observed which reset the machine. This could be repeated and the same outcome is seen. An equivalent 24V PSU was installed to test the system with this new PSU. The machine powered on and operated correctly.
The laser beam was checked, as the customer had reported that the machine would not cut on the right-hand side. The beam alignment was found to not be correct. So the Mantech machine was realigned, the mirrors were also cleaned. The main focusing lens had a mark but was successfully cleaned.
The laser power was measured at the exit aperture if the nozzle and was shown to be reading 73w at 80% power.
After running the machine for approximately 10-15 minutes, the contactor suddenly switched off with the machine being in an idle state so no load people applied by processing material. Power cycling the machine did not resolve the issue and pressing the reset button had no effect on the machine. The same relay as before could be seen flicking on and off.
Therefore continued investigation needed to be carried out. Items that were tested including all the wiring and terminals, swapping of relay blocks, bypassing switches. The resulting issue was found to be three door sensors were faulty, even tho they appeared to be working correctly as above. These were replaced and the customer was advised that a new power supply should be sourced as a precaution.
After replacing these sensors the machine was run through several test runs to ensure continued operation
