Laser Machine Service near Benhilton, on a HPC LaserScript 1290 80w Machine – Glenthorpe High School
A visit to a customer, Glenthorne High School was requested by our partner RS Design and Technology as the customer had said that the machine was struggling to cut through some material. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Upon arrival at Glenthorne High School the machine was visually inspected. The machine had an 80w EFR laser tube, this was showing visible signs of being overdriven, as their was discolouration at both ends of the laser tube. On closer inspection it was observed that there was a small metal fragment could be seen internally to the laser tube, which appeared partially detached and damaged. The water inside the laser tube was also of a light brown colour with particulate flowing inside, this showed and confirmed that the chiller itself also had significant contamination.
As an initial check a laser power measurement was taken at the nozzle, it was shown to be producing 51w @100% power. All mirrors were inspected, removed and cleaned. The main focusing lens was heavily contaminated. This lens was removed and the laser power tested again. The laser power was now shown to be 98w @100% power. The focusing was attempted to be cleaned, but the contamination had damaged the protective coating on the lens surface and needed to be replaced.
Other items of the laser service that were carried out with only a few minor recommendations: –
- Water Cooling Chiller Inspection, Clean, Drain & Refill
- Inspected and cleaned all mirrors, lenses and nozzle
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Full Laser Alignment Check
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Electronics Inspection – Cooling fan on electrical cabinet – not working but not critical
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
The system was fitted with an extraction system. The Bofa AD Oracle is underpowered for the size of the machine that it was connected to. This usually causes the extractor to be run at a high flow rate than usually, resulting in shorter life of the filters and generally more noise pollution. To aid the extraction system the extraction port of the laser was inspected and was in need of a clean.
The laser was being used to cut acrylic amongst other materials, and this resulted in a strong smell of acrylic being exhausted from the extractor. This means that the filters are saturated and would need replacing. The filters were inspected and the Combined Filter was dated 2020 and the pre-filter was dated 2021 and therefore it was recommended for them to be changed.
As a final check the laser power was checked from the Nozzle and was measured to be 87w @ 70%. The DT technician at the high school was advised to not run the laser machine at powers over 70% to preserve the life of the laser tube and machine.
Several jobs were run on the machine to check it’s overall function. As some additional support to the customer, a number of laser maintenance procedures were demonstrated and several jobs were run on the machine.
