Laser Machine Repair near Harlow – Mark Hall Academy GCC X252 80 watt
The visit to Mark Hall Academy, our customer, was to investigate an issue that the customer was having with their GCC X252 flatbed laser marking machine. The issue reported was that the machine would start off cutting the material as expected and then after approximately 5 minutes the machine would not cut through anymore. The investigation was conducted by our service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’, the laser repair included: –

Upon arrival at Mark Hall Academy the machine was visually inspected. There was nothing of any note to mention on this inspection. So the investigation of the laser cutting issues started. The engineer initially checked the beam coming out of the laser tube. This was within normal expectations. The mirror were all checked and were all clean. The lens was removed and checked, there was a mark on the lens and it could also be seen that the lens coating was starting to be removed.


The laser power was measured from the output nozzle and was shown to be reading 95w @85% 26mA.
Whilst performing these tests it was noted that the CW3000 chiller unit’s fan was constant running. The unit was drained, and the whole system was flushed through. The chiller was refilled with water and tested. It was noted that there were some particles inside the laser tube.
When running the chiller and laser to check the CW3000 fan. The laser PSU could be audibly heard ‘hissing’ after the laser tube had been running for 5-10 seconds. The sound was checked against the power output of the tube. As the laser PSU started to ‘hiss’ the power from the laser tube would drop approximately 10w and continued to drop further.


Following on from the investigation the customer was shown and advised that the laser PSU needed to be replaced, it was also suggested as a precaution to replace the laser tube. The lens in the laser head also needed to be replaced due to the damaged coating on the lens itself. The chiller would have to be replaced at some point later down the line, as it was suggested to the customer that the fault was not an overriding issue warranting immediate replacement.
The customer also had an Bofa AD Oracle iQ extraction unit which was part of their laser machine setup. The unit was inspected and the filters were found to be dated May 2019. Although the extraction unit was not showing any alarms or even producing a smell when running it was recommended that the BOFA AD Oracle Combined Filter main filter be replaced due to the HEPA filters, having a shelf life as there is active carbon within the filter to clean the air from fumes, this is most prevalent when cutting laser acrylic.
