Laser Machine Repair near Chislehurst, on a Jindiao – Berghamm 1290 80 watt – Coopers School
A visit to a new customer, Coopers School was required as the customer had requested a call out as their were having issues with the laser machine not working. The laser repair was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser repair visit included: –
Jindiao – Berghamm 1290 80 watt
Upon arrival at Coopers School the machines were visually inspected. The machine was dated 2015, so it was a 10 year old machine. Within this time the laser machine have seen vast improvements in safety and controllability. This was evident on this machine. As the main access door had not only a microswitch safety interlock, but there was only one.

There was no safety interlock on the rear laser tube cover and no sensors on the front pass through port. This safety interlocks are critical pieces of equipment to have on your laser machine, as without them, you are able to open these covers and see directly into the laser chamber whilst the laser can still be running. The classifies the laser as a Class 4.

The laser was test fired as the 80 watt laser tube was dated December 2014. It was firing successfully.

The alignment was checked and the first 2 mirrors were acceptable. There was a slight adjustment needed on the third mirror to ensure that the beam was parallel to the Z-Axis and going through the centre of the nozzle.
All mirrors were checked and cleaned. No issues with the mirrors were found. The focusing lens was also inspected and was found to be heavily contaminated and damaged. This was removed and replaced with a new 2″ lens.

The laser power was measured at the exit aperture to the nozzle and was shown to be reading 75w @85% power. No milliammeter reading was available so overdriving of the laser tube is a possibility.
The electrics cabinet and switches were all checked, the laser power supply appeared to be heavily contaminated with dust, so this was blown and vacuumed off. There may also be some issue with the customers chiller unit as the fan was constantly running, however considering the units age and the fact that it was still working it was decided to not investigate the potential issue.
The unit was being run with an aging Leetro control module and HMI, the system was being used with LaserCut 5.3. There a lot more powerful controllers and software now available.

At the end of the laser repair, several of the customers test jobs were run and the customer was happy with all tests performed.

Recommendations
Due to the age of the machine, the condition of the laser tube and the laser PSU but more importantly the inherent lack of safety measures on this machine the customer was advised to start to plan for replacing the unit in the near future.
