Laser Commissioning near Broadstairs, Sharp Laser 1490 130 watt – Windridge Coatings
A visit to a new customer, Windridge Coatings was required as the customer was having issues with the commissioning and setup of their direct Chinese purchase of a Sharp Laser 1490 130 watt flatbed marking machine. The customer had purchased the machine a few months ago and wanted some specialist help in the installation and commissioning of the machine in order to ensure that the machine was optimially setup. The laser commissioning was conducted by our highly experience laser service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The commissioning visit included: –
Sharp Laser 1490 130 watt
Upon arrival at Windridge Coatings the Sharp Laser machine was visually inspected. It was quickly noted that the machine had no safety interlocks installed on the main door of the machine. This means that the laser can be operated with the main door open, which is a significant safety hazard. This is a serious issue when machines are being bought direct from China, as not all the necessary safety features are included. The safety standards in China are significantly more lax than the Europeon or British standards
The customer was informed and purchased a verified coupled magnetic door interlock to which they would install themselves.

The initial inspection continued, it was observed that the silicon pipes from the chiller unit had been installed incorrectly with the water flowing from the chiller’s output to the machine’s output. This meant that the chiller water was flowing the wrong way through the laser tube, resulting in air bubbles not being able to be dispersed effectively. If this was left unresolved, it could lead to serious damage of the laser tube and the potential of a catastrophic failure.

The chiller cooling flow was corrected and the rest of the laser system commissioned. The laser beam was aligned. The mirrors were inspected and the focus lens was checked. All were in good working order. The laser power was measured at the exit aperture to the laser nozzle and was shown to be 120watt @28mA 85% power. This was locked into the controller as the maximum available power setting, to avoid any potential overdriving of the laser tube.

Training was provided on the operational aspect of the machine, the maintenance requirements for day-to-day running of the machine. The software which the customer wanted to run was Lightburn, training of the software was also delivered to the operators of the machine.
The machine was then fully tested and found to be operating correctly and to the customers satisfaction.
