Laser Aligning Service in Northampton, Boxford BGL460 90 watts – Weston Favell Academy
A visit to a new customer, Weston Favell Academy. The customer had requested a visit as they were having issues with the laser machine cutting or engraving properly and following discussions with us pointed towards the laser alignment of the system being incorrect. Whilst on site the laser machine would also be given a health check. The laser alignment was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser service visit included: –
Boxford BGL690 90 watt
Upon arrival at the Weston Favell Academy the flatbed machine was visually inspected. The machine was in generally good condition, which was to be expected since the customer had only purchased the machine in April 2025, 5 months previously and had completed only 194 jobs. The issue with the machine was determined to be the laser alignment from the output of mirror 3. The alignment was corrected and the laser power measured from the exit aperture of the nozzle, the laser power still seemed too low for a new 90 watt machine. The laser power was showing to be around only 50w @99% power. This was not within the normal parameters of a new 90 watt machine.

Further investigating the issue the mirrors and focusing lens were inspected and cleaned but the laser power was still showing only 55w @99% power. The laser tube was inspected and was found that the laser tube had been manufactured in January 2024. This was relayed to the customer and advised that they should contact the manufacturer for a replacement tube under a warranty claim. So the standard video shown below was taken for the customer to establish a laser tube warranty claim with the main supplier.
For the rest of the machine, there were a few other items that were noted as ‘incorrect’ and could cause a problem.
The first issue was the found that the upper limit of the Z-axis was significantly higher than the auto-focus adaptor that was attached to the laser head. The laser tube was at it’s highest point, so if the auto-focus had failed then the Z-axis would have collided with the laser head and either caused significant damage to it or the laser bed before being stopped by the limit switch.

The second issue was that the extraction hose of 100mm in diameter was just placed inside the 150mm hose, so the extraction was not running at any decent efficiency, it would require a 100mm – 150mm reducer.

How to stop the laser head dragging on Material
Ensure that the material is flat and not bowed or warped.
Check the height adjustment of the laser head and set the correct z-axis distance.
Verify that the workpiece is secured properly on the bed.
