HPC Laser Service near Canterbury, 6090 80 watts – Barton Manor School
A visit to a new customer, Simon Langton Girl’s School. The customer had requested a service visit as their machine was in need of not only a service but the customer had reported having an issue where the laser would not home properly. The laser service was conducted by our highly experienced service engineer ‘Gavin Edwards’. The laser machine service visit included: –

Upon arrival at Simon Langton Girl’s School the HPC flatbed machine was visually inspected. Apart from the reported fault the machine was in a generally good condition.
The initial fault of the machine not homing properly on a cold start up was investigated. The fault was demonstrated that upon a ‘cold’ startup. The motors on both axis would not move at all. The customer has to power on the machine several times before it becomes operational.
The engineer started by checking that the all the controller connections were properly inserted and secure, which they were. Secondly he inspected and confirmed that the limit sensors were functioning correctly. The PSU that was supplying the motor controllers was tested and shown to be receiving 240v AC and was giving the correct output of 36V DC. However an issue was found on the PSU that on ‘cold’ startup, the voltage would increasing from 0 V gradually and not straight away. The same happened when the unit was powered off.
This solved the issue, as anytime a ‘cold’ startup or a startup after a long period of time was attempted there was not sufficient voltage coming from the PSU to start the motors. A return visit would be required to install a new 36V PSU. A procedure was established with the customer to power on the machine for 1 – 2 minutes to let the voltage stabilise from the PSU to enable the machine to function properly, whilst the new PSU was delivered.

The service aspect of the visit could now be started. The focusing lens was found to have a mark on the surface which had damaged the laser coating of the lens. Meaning that the focusing lens would not only absorb more laser power, but would not focus the beam as effectively. The focus lens was replaced with a new 2″ Focusing Lens.


The remaining items of a service were carried out with no issues: –
- Inspect, Clean and Lubricate all Linear/Guide Rails
- Checked Belts for Tension and Damage
- Cleaned the Rear Fan Filter and Filter Box
- Cleaned Chiller Fan Filters
- Checked and Adjusted Beam Alignment
- Calibrate Bed Level
- Electronics Inspection
- Safety Interlocks Inspection & Test
When the cooling system was inspected it was noted that there was significant build-up of dirt residue inside the laser tube.

The system was drained, flushed and refilled with the customer own distilled water supply.
The laser power was measured at the output to the laser nozzle. The power was shown to be reading 95.8w @80% power.

There was some spare time at the end of the service visit, so Gavin reviewed routine maintenance procedures with the customer, the machine had it’s final test and the customer was happy, so they left us a nice 5 star review!
