Frequently Asked Questions

What materials can I cut?

The Lightblade range is great for cutting woods, plastics, rubbers, leathers and foams. Just be careful to avoid any Chloride based materials such as PVC.

What materials can I laser engrave?

The CO2 Lightblade range can engrave the same materials as it can cut (woods, leathers, plastics, rubbers and foams) the system can also engrave minerals such as slate, marble and glass. The Lightblade dual source machines, which combine a CO2 and fibre laser sources are also able to engrave a wide range of metals as well such as stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, brass, copper and titanium.

What thickness materials can I laser cut?

This depends on the laser power, an 80 Watt machine will be able to cut thicker materials than a 40 Watt. The 80 Watt machine will also cut the midrange of materials quicker than the 40 Watt. We would be happy to match the power to the application for you – just drop us a call and we can talk you through it.

Can I cut metal with the Lightblade?

It is not possible to cut metal with the Lightblade range of laser cutting and engraving machines. While it is possible to laser cut metal, using both CO2 and Fibre lasers, these machines typically have a power output of 1KW+. The power output from our glass tubes (even the 150W variants) is insufficient to cut metal.

The Lightscribe fibre marking can sometimes laser cut very thin (<200 microns) sheets of metal. However, this will require a number of passes and can result in thermal stress of the surrounding material. 

Is more power better?

Not necessarily, it all depends on your application. Using a 150W laser to cut thin card would be like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Laser tubes also become more expensive as the power output increases – buying the most powerful laser could be an expensive overkill. How long do the laser tubes last?

Tube life varies on the use and application, but they can last for a long time. It’s not unusual for our quality laser tubes to last 4 years of more. 

Typical reasons for tube failure are overdriving the tube (too much current); frozen coolant that cracks the tube; dirty optics that result in the tube being run harder for longer; insufficient cooling causing the tube to overheat. 

Thinklaser will replace a tube under warranty if it drops below 80% of the specified output inside of 1 year from purchase.

Why do you pre-delivery inspect (PDI) your machines?

We are proud to be partnered with our suppliers of the Lightblade range, they do an amazing job of building the Lightblade to our specifications and are always working to improve the machines. However, it wouldn’t be fair on our customers if we didn’t know every detail of each machine we supply. There are rarely any quality defects when we inspect the machine, but it wouldn’t be doing the job properly if we didn’t take the time to ensure every  machine is as it should be. Our PDI process is highly detailed and we document everything to ISO 9001 standards.

What software does the Lightblade come with?

The Lightblade is supplied with Lightburn as standard, which works with both Windows and Mac computer systems.

You can also use Ruida’s RDWorks software as an alternative.

Can I fit a rotary attachment?

Yes, Thinklaser supply two variants, one for wood and one for glass.

How long is the Lightblade warranty?

Thinklaser offer a 2 year parts only warranty on the Lightblade range.

How safe is the Lightblade laser machine?

All Lightblade’s are fully Class 1 compliant meaning that they are fit for classroom, office and production environments. The cutting bed is interlocked, meaning that the laser power is disconnected the second any doors open during operation.
